Random Writings #3 – Half-hearted Fanatic

| |

Part of living and working on the road in an RV is working, a very important part actually, and preferably a paid working activity is preferred, one that I don’t have right now, so I am all over the place attempting to create little bits of income here and there.

Half-hearted fanaticRecently I have decided I should be an online tutor. Why not?  I have a teaching degree and background.  I am also the person that says you should put forth effort where you have a passion. So, in the middle of completing an online tutoring application that was asking me millions of essay questions, I was wondering if I was putting forth the effort to where my passion was. Shouldn’t I have been putting forth the effort on building up our website, writing content, gaining followers, posting on social media?  All of the above?  Yes, but I also realized that I was actually enjoying myself, feeling intellectual, and excited about tutoring.

The point of this rambling is that it is ok to have more than one interest; in fact, you should have more than one interest. You should be a half-hearted fanatic.

Author, Edward Abbey, said it best:

“One final paragraph of advice: do not burn yourselves out. Be as I am – a reluctant enthusiast….a part-time crusader, a half-hearted fanatic. Save the other half of yourselves and your lives for pleasure and adventure. It is not enough to fight for the land; it is even more important to enjoy it. While you can. While it’s still here. So get out there and hunt and fish and mess around with your friends, ramble out yonder and explore the forests, climb the mountains, bag the peaks, run the rivers, breathe deep of that yet sweet and lucid air, sit quietly for a while and contemplate the precious stillness, the lovely, mysterious, and awesome space. Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to the body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much; I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those desk-bound men and women with their hearts in a safe deposit box, and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this; You will outlive the bastards.”

Here’s to being your best half-hearted fanatic!
