The SoulFire Project: A Guitar and a Full Tank of Gas

| | , ,

As one should do when exploring the Baja Peninsula, we found ourselves on the beach, sun-kissed, cervezas in hand, dancing to live music. But this live music wasn’t from just any band; this band was The SoulFire Project.

Touring through Baja, we first experienced the magic of The SoulFire Project on Playa Tecolote near La Paz. As we were heading north, we happened upon them again at Playa El Burro, one of the many popular beaches that are a part of Bahia de Concepción just south of Mulegé. And like many others, from the start, we were enamored with their music, but even more so with their passion.

Meet The SoulFire Project

The SoulFire Project is exactly that – a project – envisioned from a dream that combined travel and artistic endeavors that turned into a reality of global musicians traveling the Americas in a 1979 converted school bus. And just like this isn’t any band, this bus isn’t just any bus. It’s as much of a piece of art and culture as the music is. Running off of vegetable oil and powered by solar, the iconic and highly recognizable bus is a home just as much as it is a creative space.

But it is also a way for the entire team to live sustainably, from the fuel used in the bus to the food they eat, to the waste expended. As Cooper says, “It’s important for us as responsible human beings to live in the most sustainable way that we can, and now we’re doing this nomadically.”

Gaining experience and perspective all along their journeys, The SoulFire Project embraces inspiring musical styles. Taking inspiration both from the music and the musicians, their genre is a Mestizo World Fusion of styles the likes of Cumbia, Reggae, Afro-Latin, and more.

Meet Cooper Morgan, Instigator of The SoulFire Project

And it all began with a two month trip.

Cooper Morgan, the self-defined instigator and creative force behind The SoulFire Project, is the songwriter, the vocalist, guitarist, and sometimes even a percussionist. He’s also the mechanic and aspiring engineer of sorts to setup and maintain the bus they all live and travel in.

That two month trip turned into 11 months and then into a future born from a dream, from travels, and from artists met along the way.

With a guitar and a full tank of gas, Cooper realized he had everything he needed to create a life he loved.
